Writing Challenges

Nanowrimo November is National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo. Challenge yourself to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Sign up for free to keep track of word count, get pep talks, and win prizes.

Camp Nanowrimo A less strict version of Nanowrimo that takes place in April and July. You do need to have an account with Nanowrimo in order to sign in.

Napowrimo In April, write a poem a day for the entire month. Daily prompts on the website. Register your website and you may be featured!

Organizations

California Writer’s Club, Orange County Branch This writer’s club meets the second Saturday of the month and hosts informative seminars for $3 members, $5 nonmembers.

Romance Writer’s of America, Orange County Chapter Even if you’re not a romance writer, you may want to check out their seminars and online courses with very reasonable fees. And they meet at the Brea Community Center, just across the street from our library.

Orange County Writers An online writer’s group with an active Facebook page. They offer online critique groups, networking opportunities, and meet-up opportunities.

Events

April: Literary Orange A meeting of authors, readers, and librarians that takes place in Irvine. Tickets and registration usually begins around February.

April: LA Times Festival of Books Free festival that takes place on USC campus, LA. Look up your favorite authors and reserve seats by getting tickets early that day on the festival grounds.

All Summer: Shakespeare at Griffith Park Free Shakespeare performances in LA. Even free parking!

All Summer: Shakespeare by the Sea Free Shakespeare performances that take place at various cities in Southern California. Bring a picnic and enjoy.

October: Indie Author Signing Event that takes place in Anaheim

Brea Library Of course! For those of you who wasn’t aware the library existed, my blog post on my launch party shows photographs and parking instructions.

Bookoff A used bookstore in Costa Mesa, specializing in Japanese books and comics (in Japanese!), but with a good selection of English books and manga, as well.

Camelot Books A used bookstore in Fountain Valley, with many magical books and plenty of classics.

Bookman A used bookstore in Orange, packed with fiction and non-fiction alike.
